RHEL6 VNC Setup Insturctions

Rough Draft:

FROM THE JLAB DESKTOP(HOST):

Run the following commands:

  1. sudo yum remove libvncserver.
  2. sudo yum install tigervnc-server
  3. vncpasswd (set a password)
  4. sudo nano /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
  5. Copy and paste the following lines, make sure to insert the end user's username where it says <username>:
  • VNCSERVERS="3:<username>"     #(3 is the last number of the port that vnc will use, and atesvnc is the user I created)*590 is the first 3 numbers of the port.
  • VNCSERVERARGS[3]="-geometry 1024x768 -depth 16 -localhost" #(Self-explanitory, you can created a number of these and then specify whichever arg number in the client to get a different setup)
  1. ctrl+x and then save the document
  2. sudo service vncserver start
  3. sudo chkconfig vncserver on

FROM THE PERSONAL MAC(Client):

  1. Terminal > ssh -L 6437:localhost:9837 <username>@login.jlab.org
  2. jlab15% > ssh -L 9837:localhost:5903 <username>@<hostname>.jlab.org
  3. "Real VNC" vnc client config:
  • Hostname- localhost:6437
  • Password- <Password created in step 3>
  1. Click "connect"
