Move MIS Servers from JLAB/Workstations to correct OUs

  • Task -- Relocate MIS servers in Active Directory from the default "Workstations OU" location to their proper server OUs.
  • Coordinator -- M. Wise
  • Who it affects -- MIS staff, users of MIS applications (virtually everyone)
  • What systems it affects
    • INTEUM
    • JLABDOC
    • MAXIMOVM
    • MISVMW1-6
    • MISW2, 4, 5, 5VM, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15N, 16, 16VM
    • MISWEB2NEW, 2OLD, 3, 5, 5NEW, 5OLD
    • TC-TEST
  • Discussion --
    • The default location in AD for newly joined systems is JLAB\Workstations. This is normally a good choice, but during the frenzy of rebuilds, etc. that occurred followign the July cyber event, a number of servers ended up staying in this incorrect location. Moving these systems is essential to gettign the correct policies applied to them, including compartmentalized admin credentials, etc.
    • Normally, a relocation in AD requires a delay to account for AD replication, followed by a restart of the affected system. Since patches are going out this evening as well, we will rely on the patch reboots to handle the restart of these systems.
  • Preparation --
    • Confirmed with MIS that these systems are all ready to move. Tested the process and associated changes that arose due to new policies, etc. on several test servers a few weeks ago. This is expected to be very quick and simple
  • Implementation
    • A couple of hours before the start of the maintenance, using the active directory users and computers tool with privileges to move servers...
    • Move ADMW10 from JLAB/Workstations to JLAB/ADMIN/Servers/TerminalServers
    • Move the remaining systems (in the list above) from JLAB/Workstations to JLAB/MIS/Servers/WebServers
    • Allow upcoming reboots for patches to complete the process.
  • Backout -- Move them back
  • Time Estimate -- 5 minutes
  • Dependencies -- AD up
