JLab Mac Systems

The IT Division manages Macintosh (Mac) systems purchased with Jefferson Lab (JLab) funds.  For current JLab-owned Macs, please see the matrix below for supported versions of macOS.  If you would like to purchase a JLab-owned Mac, please contact the IT Division Help Desk and we'd be happy to assist you with this purchase.

No Support  - Macs running this version should be rebuilt or excessed as needed
Ending Support  - Version support will end shortly after next Major Version Release
Legacy Support  - Macs running this version have support but encouraged to upgrade, No new installs
Full Support  - Version is fully supported by the IT Division
Beta Support  - Version is unavailable, a Beta Version, or is being evaluated by the Computer Center*




  • Installing Unsupported or Beta Versions of future releases of macOS is not permitted on JLab owned machines.
  • Non Intel Based Installations of macOS are not supported. PowerPC based Macs should be replaced.
  • Per Apple Best Practices, we will not install any version of macOS that is earlier than the version that the computer came with.

Configuring a JLab-Owned Mac

Once your Mac has arrived, please drop it off at the at the IT Division Help Desk.  We will then submit a CCPR for in the owner's username and proceed with our standard Common User Environment (CUE) configuration.  Your Mac will be configured to use your JLab user account information and we will install the following software:

  • Microsoft Office 2016
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection
  • Firefox
  • Thunderbird
  • Java
  • XQuartz
