RHEL7 VNC Setup Instructions

These instructions are relatively new to our webpage. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact the IT Division Help Desk.

  1. Install software by running
    • sudo yum install tigervnc-server
  2. Copy config file and set user
    • sudo cp /lib/systemd/system/vncserver@.service /lib/systemd/system/vncserver@:1.service
    • sudo vi /lib/systemd/system/vncserver@:1.service 
  3. All items highlighted are changes made. Replace jdoe with your username. Geometry may change depending on monitor.
    • ExecStart=/usr/sbin/runuser -l jdoe -c "/usr/bin/vncserver %i -geometry 1280x1024 -localhost "
    • PIDFile=/home/jdoe/.vnc/%H%i.pid
  4. Add the following line at the top of [Service]
    • Restart=always
  5. Write and quit (:wq) and run the following sequence of commands:
    • sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    • sudo systemctl enable vncserver@:1.service
    • sudo systemctl start vncserver@:1.service
  6. To make password for new VNC user
    • vncserver
    • If not prompted, try to reset password using vncpasswd
  7. Reboot machine
