Backing up your data files:
- You will need to save a copy
of your data files to a network drive in order to transfer them back to
your new computer. The Computer
Center offers a
centrally available scratch filesystem that is
available to all unix
and windows systems. This file system is not backed up, has no associated
disk quotas, and is intended for temporary storage only. Files in a user's
scratch directory that have not been accessed with 14 days are
automatically deleted.
To use the scratch directory, click Start, Run, and then type
"\\jlabscr\scratch". After the file explorer window opens you
can copy your files for temporary storage. The following is a list of
files you may want to include in your backup.
- Exported Address Books
and Bookmarks
My Documents Folder( ex. c:\documents and
settings\USERNAME\My Documents... )
AutoCad Drawings ( ex.
all .DWG files in c:\ACAD2000 )
Files from Desktop ( ex. c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\Desktop... )
Search for data files with the extensions of programs you use, e.g.,
*.doc, *.ppt, *.pdf
and move those you need.
You should not attempt to transfer program file directories as most programs
will not work unless they are actually installed using the included setup
utility.
Uninstall software that is being transferred to the new computer:
- You will need to uninstall
any licensed software that you plan to transfer to your new computer. This
software may include: Microsoft Office, Autocad,
or purchased Adobe products. Be sure to read the license agreements for the
software that came with your old computer, it may not be transferable to
your new one (e.g., OEM licenses).
To uninstall software click Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
and select each item to be uninstalled.
Network Configuration:
- If you are planning on using
the same IP address and hostname from your old machine you will need to unjoin the JLAB domain and remove your IP address from
network properties. Be sure the write down your hostname, IP Address,
Default Gateway, and Subnet Mask so that you can enter the values on your
new machine.
Windows 2000:
- Unjoining
the Domain: From the control panel select System Properties, click
the Network Indentification tab, then click the Change button. In the dialog box select
Workgroup and type "Workgroup" as the name. Click OK to apply
the changes.

Removing your IP address: From the control panel select Network Connections, right click on your local area connection
and select properties, double click the TCP/IP protocol, select the Obtain
IP Address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically
buttons. Click OK to save changes.

You MUST notify the helpdesk that you
will be using the same hostname on your new machine so we can remove the
machine name from our databases. This will prevent a name conflict on the JLab Domain. You may contact the helpdesk either by email
at helpdesk@jlab.org or phone at x7155.
Setting up your new computer
Unpack your computer and follow the instructions provided to connect your
machine properly. After turning your machine on, continue with the
manufacturer's setup utility. You may be prompted to configure your network
settings during the first boot of your machine. If not, please refer to the
