Configure Mail

The JLAB Computer Center recommends the following Mail Interface Programs, depending on what type of device you use to log in:

PC or Macintosh -- We recommend Thunderbird as an email client for your JLab email.

• To configure Thunderbird for IMAP mail with SSL enabled on your PC please see the Thunderbird Email Configuration configuration documents
• To configure Thunderbird for IMAP mail with SSL enabled on your Macintosh please see the Macintosh Thunderbird configuration documents.
• If you are using Microsoft, and prefer Outlook, please see the Configuring Outlook for Email configuration document.

Unix/Linux Workstation (including the HP CAD systems) -- One of the following:

• Thunderbird - This is the default version of thunderbird that you get when you logon and type "thunderbird".  To use Thunderbird version 2.x, you may type "thunderbird2".
  Thunderbird should be configured as an IMAP mail client with SSL enabled.
• Pine - This is a text mode interface, useful if you want to check your mail from a terminal window. There is a Pine "Getting Started" guide , or see http:/www.washington.edu/pine for more details.
  Note: Pine must now be configured as an IMAP over ssl client. Click here for instructions.

Text Terminal: Pine (text mode interface)

Web Browser: Squirrel Mail is a web-based email application provided for access to your JLab email from offsite from any web-browser.

NOTE: The majority of mail interface programs that can be utilized to access email at JLAB must use IMAP mail with SSL enabled. Further detail and information on IMAP can be found at http://www.imap.org/ .
