CUE

JLAB Computer Center CUE Services

CUE is an acronym for Common User Environment and is the computing environment provided and supported by the JLAB Computer Center. The primary goal of CUE is to provide users with a standard environment on all supported computer systems with simplified and enhanced systems management. Systems must be configured to operate in this environment as directed in the configurations specified in the Unix, Linux, and Windows web pages, to utilize CUE.

Original CUE Specification Document 8/96/01: html, postscript

CUE is designed based upon several simple principles:

CUE User Accounts

If you have an account on a JLAB central computer you already have a CUE user account. This account will provide access to all CUE provided resources, both Unix and Windows. If you need information on user accounts please see the CUE User Accounts Page. If you want to change or are having problems with your CUE password please see Changing Your CUE Password.

CUE Groups and Group Areas

CUE Groups are managed centrally for both Unix and Windows by the Computer Center. These groups are used to share common computing resources between users working on the same project or tasks. Additionally within CUE provisions are made to supply areas that are shared and accessible by individuals in the CUE groups that are assigned ownership of the directories.

CUE Directories

When you log onto CUE configured systems there are centrally provided directories that will be available to you whether you log onto a Unix system or a CUE configured Windows PC. These directories are being shared to CUE configured systems via filesystems available from Computer Center managed network fileservers. Because these file systems are mounted to all the CUE configured systems, regardless of which operating system they are running, you will see the same CUE directories regardless of which system you log into. Please see the CUE Directories page for detailed information on the available directories.

CUE Backups and File Recovery

CUE backups to tape are done by the Computer Center every night. All files stored on the central network fileservers are backed up. Local PC and Unix hard drives are not backed up, and the Computer Center cannot recover locally stored files that have been deleted. Details can be found on the CUE Backups and File Recovery page.

CUE Desktop System Configuration

For ease of system management and configuration Desktop Systems including: Unix, Linux, and Windows are configured in a similar fashion for each platform within CUE. In most cases the Computer Center provides a standard desktop configuration for each platform. These standard CUE desktop configurations enable the Computer Center to manage and troubleshoot these systems more efficiently. Additionally these standard configurations make transitioning from machine to machine and platform to platform easier.

For technical details on configuring desktop systems for CUE please use the following links:

CUE Software

CUE provides a standard set of applications located in default locations on both Unix and Windows NT systems. The default location for CUE supported software is the /apps directory on CUE configured Unix systems, and the L: drive (apps directory) on CUE configured Windows NT systems.

The Unix Services page provides in depth current information on what software is available on each CUE supported Unix platform as well as brief descriptions and which revision of the software is installed. All CUE Unix software is installed and available without any user intervention or configuration necessary.

The Windows Services page provides information specifically for the Windows NT implementation of CUE including supported software and installation instructions. CUE Windowssoftware currently requires user interaction to install, upgrade, and maintain. In the near future users will have the option of remote desktop mangement for their CUE Windows systems through remote management software for all CUE supported software.

CUE Login Environment

When a login is performed onto any CUE configured system, whether it is Unix, Linux, or Windows, a default environment is setup for that login session:

Unix Login Default Environment

Windows NT Login Default Environment

CUE Magnetic Tape Drives

There are currently two possible places for CUE users to directly access magnetic tape drives:

  1. TAPE1, an HP715 system running HP_UX 10.2, is located in the terminal area in the second floor atrium at the rear entrance to the Computer Center.
  2. TAPE2 an HP C160 system running HP_UX 10.2, located in the Counting House upstairs racks.

Information on accessing and using these tape drives can be found on the CUE Magnetic Tape Drive page.
