NCD X-Terminal Wipe-N-Load Procedure

NCD X-Terminal Restoration of Default CUE Configuration Procedure

Preliminary:

The following procedure allows a NCD X-Terminal previously in use at JLab to be restored to its default CUE configuration. Warning: This procedure erases any configuration parameters stored in your X-Terminal's non-volatile RAM. Most users do not need this data, and in fact, it is the cause of most problems routinely encountered on these terminals. If you have specifically configured your terminal in some way using this feature, this procedure should not be followed.

Procedure:

  1. Log out of any session that might be running on the x-terminal.
  2. Power the base unit off.
  3. After 5-10 seconds, power the system back on
  4. You should see the system display messages in the upper-left corner like:
    	Boot Monitor V2.4.3
    	Testing Memory	8.0 Mbytes
    	Network controller passed 00:00:A7:12:34:56

  5. The next line may vary, but should be something like:
    	TFTP load <ESC> to abort.

  6. Abort the operation by depressing the (Esc) key. On most NCD terminals, this is also labelled "F11", and is located above the Backspace key.
  7. Once aborted, you should get a prompt like:
    	Boot Monitor
    	>

  8. Type "nv" and press return, to enter the Non-Volatile RAM setup.
  9. Type "l" ('ell') and press return to load x-terminal defaults.
  10. Type "s" and press return to save the new values (defaults) -- you will have to confirm this operation by answering "y" to a confirmation dialog.
  11. Type "q" and press return to quit the NVRAM setup and return to the boot monitor.
  12. From the Boot Monitor prompt, type "rs" and press return to reset (reboot) the terminal.
As the terminal boots, you may notice somewhat different messages than before. So long as you don't see lots of errors, etc. you are done. If problems are encountered, please contact the Computer Center Helpdesk for assistance.
