This document describes how to set up the program PuTTY. PuTTY is now
JLAB's only supported terminal emulation software package for Microsoft Windows
based computer
systems. It replaces TTSSH (TeraTerm), which supports only
SSH protocol 1 and JLAB will support only SSH protocol 2 on all central
machines, such as db1. If you have been using TTSSH to connect to db1, for
example, you should replace it with PuTTY at your first opportunity.
First, the current version of Microsoft's "Windows Installer" is necessary to allow the PuTTY package to be installed. Please choose the installer for your system from the two listed below. Note that the legacy version is provided to support home users who may still use earlier (otherwise unsupported) versions of Windows. In the event that you already have the most recent installer on your system, you will receive a message to that effect.
Second, Once you have the appropriate installer on your system, the appropriate PuTTY package can be installed by clicking on the appropriate link.
Note: The upgrade installation of PuTTY preserves any options, connection definitions, etc. that you may have set.

1. To use PuTTY, double click this icon on your
desktop
2. When you double click the icon, you will see PuTTY Configuration as shown below. By default, DB1 and jlabs1 is configured for users. To login to DB1 or jlabs1, just double click the name like second figure.

1. If you need to login to different hosts, then type full DNS name or IP address (e.g,. borg.larc.nasa.gov or 146.165.8.40) in the Host Name (or IP address) field.

1. To add more hosts to your PuTTY lists, open PuTTY Configuration and type host name you want (i.e. jlabh1) on both Host Name (or IP address) and Saved Session and select Save button.

2. When connecting to a host for the first time, you will see the following Security Alert. Select YES to continue.

You can change the terminal size, size of fonts or colors from Windows Section of PuTTY Configuration. Be careful when changing colors to use background and foreground colors that contrast significantly; lavender on white is nearly invisible. Open PuTTY, highlight the host session you wish to edit (each host must be configured individually) and click once on the Load button. From the Category list, select Window, then the attribute you wish to change.

Before logging in using your new settings, save the configuration. Within the Category list, select Session, be sure that the host session you are modifying is highlighted, then click once on the Save button.
