Configuring Windows XP Professional for CUE

This document describes how to set up the software components of the network configuration for a PC running Windows XP Professional. The Computer Center supports Windows NT platform (4.0, 2000 and XP Professionals) as part of the Jefferson Lab Common User Environment (CUE). This handout can serve as a guide to help you configure your Windows XP Professional operating system with a standard network configuration that works at Jefferson Lab.

What you need to do first:

Before starting, check that you have taken care of the following items:

  1. Check the hardware configuration of your PC: Your PC must be equipped with an Ethernet board in order to configure for CUE.
  2. Get an IP address and Internet name for your PC. To do this, fill out the IP address Request form . This is the numeric address that looks something like 129.57.xx.xxx. You cannot use someone else's address as this will cause problems for both systems! On the form, assign a unique name for your PC (the Helpdesk can verify for you that this is unique, but your last name usually works well). If you are re-using an existing hostname and IP address, you should contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155) to have the existing machine account information removed before you attempt to join the JLab domain.
