Configuring Dial-in on Windows 2000 Professional

This document show steps to configure Windows 2000 Profession for Dial-in to Jefferson Lab using modem. This document has two sections. The Section A   shows you how to install the modem and Section B shows how to configure Dial-in to Jefferson Lab. If your system has modem configured already, you can go to Section B.

Section A: Installing modem on Windows 2000

1. Windows 2000 is a true Plug & Play operating system, so it will detect most of modem and configure them for you. But if you have an old modem that is not PNP, you need to install it manually. Follow these steps to install modem manually.Open your Control panel and double click Phone and Modem Options. On the Phone and Modem Options, select the Modem tab and click Add.

2. On the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard, click Next. It will start to look for the modem. It will find hte modem in your system. If it not the modem you have, click Change and select the correct modem for your system. Once you found correct modem, click Finish to install the modem.

3. Now you have installed the modem on your system.

 

Section B: Configuring your modem to dial-in to Jefferson Lab

1. Select Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up Connection. The Network and Dial-up Connection wizard will come up. Double click Make New Connection.

2. The Network Connection Wizard will come up. Enter the Area Code (i.e. 757) and check Tone dialing and click OK.

3. Phone and Modem Option will follow. Click OK on the Phone and Modem Option to go Network Connection wizard. Click Next.

4. Select Dial-up to private network and enter the RAS phone number. (256-4000) and press Next.

5. You can select the Availability to All users or only for myself. Give it a friendly name for your connection (i.e. RAS). Select Finish.

6. Go to Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up Connections. Right click Ras icon and select Properties.

7.  On the RAS Properties, select Networking tab and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click Properties. Enter DNS address as following and click Advanced.

8. Follow next 4 diagrams to configure your system for TCP/IP configurations.

9. On the Security tab, Select Typical (recommended setting), Allow unsecured password. Now you are done with configuring your Dial-in connection.

10. Open your Network and Dial-up Connection box, double click RAS. Enter you CUE User name and Password, and click Dial.

11. You will see the following message after completed connection.
