Sending .exe Files Offsite
Sending Executable Files Offsite in Windows
For security reasons, the Computer Center does not allow executable files (.exe) to be sent
to or from JLab e-mail accounts. If an incoming or outgoing message contains
an executable file, then our filters will strip the message of the executable file and continue
the transmission to the user. Basically, this means that the recipient will receive the
e-mail without the exectuable file attached.
However, in Windows you can use WinZip to zip an attachment containing a executable file and
encrypt it with a password, which can then be sent offsite without our filters stripping
the executable file. Below are instructions on how to do this properly by conforming to security guidelines and keeping your attachments from being
stripped when sent offsite.
If you do not have WinZip installed, please visit our
WinZip 8.x Setup
for complete details on the installation process.
Procedure:
- From the Start Menu, go to All Programs >> WinZip >> WinZip 8.1 to Open WinZip.
- Under the File Menu, select New Archive to start a new zip file. You must name the
zip file, then, hit the OK button to move to the next screen.
- At this screen, hit the Password button. By using the password option, you are
password protecting all files archived in this zip file.
DO NOT use your JLab CUE password. The password you use can be as simple
as you would like, but DO NOT use your JLab CUE
password!!!
- As you can see, you will be prompted to type a password to protect the archive and
then again to confirm that the password is the same. Please hit the OK button to
complete the password entry portion.
- At this time, you may search for the file(s) you want to add to this zip file,
hightlight/select, and hit the Add button. The Add window will close and you will
see your file listed.
If you would like to add more files, then just hit the add button. This will take
you back to the window in #5.
- Once you have finished adding files to your archive, you may close WinZip. At this
time, you can proceed to your preferred e-mail client to attach the zip file the
same way you would attach a regular file.
*IMPORTANT* Final Note
Of course, the recipient must have the password to open the files in the archive. For
security reasons, we ask that you DO NOT include the password in said e-mail. The
preferred way is to call the recipient with the password.
