Currently, JLABPRT is configured as a Print Server for more than 200 printers on site. All Windows printer drivers are installed automatically when a user installed a printer for the first time. To install the printer, users DO NOT need to know which driver to use, because the print server will install appropriate drivers automatically.
The Computer Center follows a standard printer naming scheme using 3 pieces of information: the division who purchased the equipment, the printer type, and a sequential number. This moves away from the old standard of naming a printer based on its location on site, so that print queues across the lab need not be renamed when a printer is relocated.
Standard abbreviations for the divisions are DIR Directorate; PHY - Physics Division; ACC - Accelerator Division; ADM - Administration Division. Printer types include: HP - Hewlett Packard; Q QMS; AL Apple Laser Writer; TEK Tektronix; CAN Cannon. For example, a new HP printer in the Physics division may be named PHYHP10; or a new Accelerator printer could be ACCHP8.
For most printing requirements, the Computer Center currently recommends an HP printer configured with the JetDirect network-ready interface. This maintains a printer standard, and generally simplifies obtaining parts and maintenance kits.
