Thunderbird Email Configuration
Thunderbird Email Configuration
The following instructions show you how to setup email using the Thunderbird email client.
These instructions will work for Windows, Unix, and Linux. If you already know how to configure
your email, please see the quick instructions below.
QUICK INSTRUCTIONS
Server Type: IMAP
Incoming Server: mail.jlab.org [note: use SSL for incoming connections]
Outgoing Server: smtpmail.jlab.org
Outgoing Server for Offsite or Laptops: smail.jlab.org [note: use SSL for outgoing remote connections]
FULL INSTRUCTIONS W/ SCREENSHOTS
- Open Thunderbird.
- From the menu bar, select Tools and then Account Settings.
- Click on Add Account. This will open the New Account Setup Wizard.
- Select Email Account and then click Next.

- Type your full name in the section labeled Your Name and type your email address in the
section labeled Email Address. After you fill in those fields click Next.

- Choose IMAP as the incoming server type. For the section Incoming Server, type
mail.jlab.org in the dialog box. Then, type smtpmail.jlab.org in the dialog box labeled
Outgoing Server. Click Next.
(NOTE: If you are configuring mail on a remote desktop or a laptop computer, please remember to use smail.jlab.org
and enable SSL for the outgoing mail client.)

- Type your-username in the section labeled Incoming User Name. Most of the time it is there
by default. Click Next.

- Type your preferred name for this account (usually just your-username@jlab.org) and then click Next.

- Click Finish.

- FINALLY, before you can retrieve your email there is one last step. From the menu
bar, select Tools and then Account Settings. On the left, under Server Settings select the
radio button that says Use Secure Connection: SSL. Hit OK to accept this last change and to exit that box. Then,
hit the "Get Mail" button to retreive your email.
