The lab's email servers are available to valid users from off-site or at home, with certain restrictions. The main restriction is that our outgoing mail server (the system that handles mail that you are sending) will not relay mail. What this means is that if you are on travel connected to the network of another lab, or connected via an ISP (for example from home), then you should configure your outgoing mail server following the Secure Mail Client instructions linked below.
We provide a bank of 72 modems (the Remote Access Server - RAS) that users can use to connect to the lab from off-site. For JLAB staff on official travel only the RAS has also a 1-800 number. Contact the Computer Center (helpdesk@jlab.org) to obtain the number. For all other users the RAS can be reached by dialling 256-4000. Please refer to the full instructions on configuring a modem to use the RAS for a variety of systems.
This is the simplest method to access email remotely. Access to JLab email accounts are available via the Web Email Utilility found on the web at https://webmail.jlab.org. This is a secure connection which requires your JLab CUE username/password combination to retrieve and send email.
Once you are connected through the RAS, it is as though the system is on the JLAB network. Configure your mail client exactly as if you were on-site. There are no restrictions on sending or receiving mail.
Configure your off-site connection to act (almost) just like your on-site mail using Secure Mail Client
In this case, we assume you are borrowing a computer, you are probably logged in as a "guest" or similar. In this case what you do depends on the type of system you are using, and what software is available to you there.
