JLAB Computer User Accounts

JLAB Computer User Accounts

Prior to receiving a computer user account at Jefferson Lab there must be an entry for you in the JList system. The Computer Center does not create the JList entries; User International Liaison Office enters information for Lab users and visitors; new employee and contract staff information is entered by Human Resources; Facilities Management enters information for contract service providers; Division administrators can enter information for some visitors. Without an entry in JList we cannot create a user account.

How to get a User Account:

User accounts for Jefferson Lab's central systems can be obtained by completing and submitting a Computer Account Request Form. If you are a user or a student your Jefferson Lab sponsor must sign the form before the account is assigned. If you are off the site, we are willing to fax or mail the form to you and can coordinate your sponsor's signature once we receive the completed form (A fax copy is fine. Please coordinate in advance by emailing to the Helpdesk). If you are a user or student younger than 18 years of age, you and your sponsor must also meet with the Computer Center User Services Coordinator, then submit a signed copy of the Jefferson Lab Computer Center Policy on Computer Accounts for Minors to the Help Desk.

What does the User Account give you?

When a user account is assigned it gives you privileges to access CUE systems here at the lab. (CUE is the Common User Environment  which encompasses all of the Computer Center centrally managed systems and various other hosts here at the lab) CUE systems include: UNIX workstations, PC's, Mac's, and any other system that has been configured for the environment.

Your account will allow you to log onto CUE systems, where you will have access to email, www, public domain packages,  software development applications, word processing applications, various Jefferson Lab specific packages, and a wide assortment of vendor provided applications.

The password that is provided to you by the Computer Center will allow access to CUE systems, both UNIX and JLAB Windows domain PC's.

Access to the Batch and Interactive Farm systems is controlled by means of  your CUE password and UNIX group memberships. Experimental Users should contact the software coordinator for their Experimental Hall to insure that they are included in all appropriate experimental groups to allow access to the Farm systems.

How long is your User Account Active?

Your user account will stay active until your sponsor or  supervisor   indicates otherwise. To verify user accounts the Computer Center audits computer accounts twice a year (October and April). At this time, your supervisor or sponsor will confirm that your account should be maintained.

How is access to a User Account authenticated?

The authentication of a user account is accomplished by the combination of username and password. You will be provided with an initial password when you receive your account. The Computer Center does not email passwords so if you cannot be physically present, you should call the User Helpdesk (757-269-7155) between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM EST, or make other arrangements with your Jefferson Lab sponsor to facilitate this for you. As soon as you successfully login, you should change your password to a secure password. The policy for password content and rules as set forth by DOE and JLAB can be found on the Computer Center Password Rules page. Please see Changing your Jefferson Lab Password for information on how to change your password.
