Accounts for access to Jefferson Lab computer systems are managed by the Jefferson Lab Computer Center. It is the responsibility of the Computer Center to insure the integrity of user accounts and their access privileges to computer resources at Jefferson Lab.Before any user account is created and issued by the Computer Center there must be an entry for the individual requesting the account in the Jefferson Lab information system CIS. The entry of this information is completed by the hiring or sponsoring Division/Department. The Computer Center does not create or manage the entries contained in CIS, this data is maintained by the Division/Department.
After the required CIS entry is completed, an account for access to Jefferson Lab Computing resources is registered as follows:
- An individual obtains Jefferson Lab Computer User Responsibilities and User Account Request Form from either the www or from the Computer Center forms located at the Computer Center helpdesk.
- The individual reads the Jefferson Lab Computer User Responsibilities document which discusses password protection rules, software protection, archiving, and the appropriate use of Jefferson Lab computing resources.
- After reading the Computer User Responsibilities document the individual completes the Jefferson Lab User Account Request form.
- Once the individual has filled in the form it must be signed by both the individual and their supervisor or sponsor. The individual's signature is to verify that they have read and understood the Computer User Responsibilities document and the supervisor/sponsor signature is to verify that the user account request is valid and the information completed by the individual is correct.
- The completed form is then submitted to the Computer Center's helpdesk.
- It is then the responsibility of the helpdesk to verify the entries in CIS and on the User Account Request form.
- After verification a Computer Center staff member will undertake the process of registering a user account for the individual.
The following procedures are performed by the Computer Center to create the user account:
- Assign a unique username to the individual, usually based on the individual's last name or some combination of the last name and first name.
- Assign the individuals CIS record the username that has been created.
- If the individual is a Jefferson Lab employee, will be submitting timesheets, or will be making stock requests, entries are made to the Jefferson Lab information database to allow such activities from the assigned username.
- The individuals user account is then created on the central Unix NIS domain , from which access to most Unix based systems is controlled. During the creation of the user account the username, home directory, default shell, default Unix group, and initial password for the account are assigned.
- Next the user account is created on the JLAB NT domain, supplying the same information that was previously entered for Unix .
- After the completion of the above steps the completed User Account Request form and password for the account are turned over to the helpdesk.
- Once the user account is created the individual will return to the Computer Center helpdesk to retrieve their assigned username and initial password.
- The paperwork associated with the individual's user account registration is then filed into the User Account documentation that the Computer Center maintains.
