Computer System Registration Procedures
Computer System Registration Procedures
Computer systems with network access at Jefferson Lab are managed at
varying levels by the Computer Center. When a user wishes to connect a
machine to our network, the following steps are taken:
- User fills out an IP number request form. This is done using
the web form. The user must
specify on the form what operating system the machine will use (i.e. Windows,
Linux, or Mac).
- If the machine is to provide or use certain network services,
additional registration is requrired:
- If the request is for a multi-user machine, such as Linux, the
following additional steps must be taken:
- Users must fill out the Stand Alone
System Registration form. The form must include the user's name,
supervisor, and detailed contact information in the event we need to reach
them. The form also must be signed by both user and his or her
supervisor/sponsor. On this form the user must also indicate that he or she has
read the Guidelines for Stand-Alone, Multi-user
Computer Systems.
- Once both the IP address request form and the Stand Alone System
Registration form are received and information verified, the Computer Center
will issue an IP address for the system.
- The Computer Center's security officer is then informed of the
new machine.
- The Stand Alone System Registration form is then filed in a
secure location with the rest of Stand Alone forms for the machines already on
site.
The Computer Center informs the user of the IP address, reminding
him or her of the responsibilities of being the administrator for the
machine.
- The machine must be made to conform within a week to the applicable
policies for its architecture and services or its network link will be
disabled.
