WindowsXP Wireless Configuration Guide

This guide assumes that you are using WindowsXP and have a Computer Center recommended Enterasys Wireless Access Card

The part number for the wireless access card is CSIBD-AA-128, this card is openly supported by the computer center and is guaranteed to work with our wireless network, although many other wireless access cards will work on our network, this is the only one that this document will focus on.  If you have a card from a company called Cabletron, they are supported by the computer center as well, Enterasys bought out the Cabletron company.

Installing the Enterasys Wireless Access Card  (Required)
Installing the Enterasys Client Tools (Optional, but highly recommended)

Installing the Enterasys Card

The first step in this procedure is to install the wireless card itself, you can place the card in your laptop in any available PCMCIA (PC Card), the highest slot is recommended.
When you insert the card, WindowsXP will begin installing its default drivers, and you should see a popup similar to this in your task tray.

You will see a series of caption boxes appear while your hardware is being setup automatically.  After the card has been installed you will see a new icon appear on your task tray, and it will have this caption associated with it.  Move your mouse over the new icon, which is a picture of two computer screens and may have blinking blue patterns.

Double click on this new icon to bring up the connection dialog.  Being in a wireless area is required for this step,  good areas are the atrium in Cebaf Center, Second Floor Counting House, Sixth Floor ARC cubicle land, and Trailer City in front of the help desk.  When you do double click you will see a new popup that will allow you to connect the JLAB Wireless network.

In this screen you will see what appears to be an unamed wireless network in the box, in order to activate the network you will need to click on the advanced button which will bring up this screen.  And it should look something like this.

To begin configuring your computer for the wireless network, you should click on the configure button, which will bring up a new window.

You should enter in jlab for the Network name (SSID) field.  The click on Data encryption (WEP enabled).  You will also have to uncheck Network Authentication (Shared mode) and The key is provided for me automatically.  For the Network Key field, you must go to the WEP registration website HERE in order to get a valid network WEP key.  You must have a valid Username and Password assigned by the computer center in order to log in.  When you are done, and your screen looks exactly like the one above, go ahead and click OK.

At this point your screen should then look like this one above.  Click ok and at that point you should be connected to the JLab wireless network.

Be sure to click "Allow me to connect......." in the dialog box, right now Jefferson Lab does not use secure wireless access although it will be done in the future, be on the lookout for changes to wireless setup procedure in the JLab news.  Once you click connect the wireless card will connect to the wireless network and get a DHCP IP address.  You should not request an IP address or try to set on yourself, this will prevent you from being a mobile user and going to other buildings and even locations outside of JLab with your new wireless connection.

You should see a new caption box that similar to this one that will show success.

At this point you NEED to open your web browser before you DO ANYTHING else... this step is the most important.

Your web browser should go to http://netreg.jlab.org  here you MUST enter your User name and password when asked.  Netreg will then instruct you to reboot your computer, reboot your computer and you should have a a normal IP address that you can use.  If you do not get an IP address and are unable to access the network, and/or you cannot access the NetReg page you will be required to bring your laptop to the computer center in Trailer City for help.

Installing the Enterasys Software (optional, highly recommended)

First, you need to download the software program HERE, the easiest thing to do is to save this file to your desktop where it can be installed later.
Once the file has been downloaded, you should double click on the file to run it.

All you need to do at this step is click Unzip and it will install the files to the correct place.

Next you should go to that destination by clicking Start -> My Computer; which will bring up this window, actual contents will vary of course.

Double Click on the C: Drive and then double click on RMabt; this will bring you to a screen which should look like this.  If you installed the files to another location, you will need to remember where you installed them and how to access them.

Next. you should double click on Client Utility folder, and you should be at a screen that looks like this

Double click on the Setup icon to begin the installation.  The default options for installation will work fine, you can keep clicking next until it starts installing the software, after you go through all the slides you should see a screen like this, before you click Finish click the check box "I'd like to start the Client Utility".  This will start the application.

At the very bottom of the screen in your task tray you should see a new icon that looks like a meter, this will tell you what your signal strength is where you are located.  It should look something like the one pictured next.

This meter will tell you how strong of a signal you have in the area, if it is green then you have excellent signal, yellow means very usable just not the best, and if it has no color to it and a red lighting bolt through it, that means it was unable to connect to any wireless network.  Double clicking this icon will allow for you to perform signal test and card diagnostics as well.
