Wireless Network Information

The wireless network at Jefferson Lab includes 50+ access points in various locations such as Cebaf Center, ARC, VARC, Counting House, Test Lab, and FEL. Wireless is the preferred connection method for laptops that move around on the site.

jlab_secure Wireless Users Must Update their systems BEFORE 5/15/08!

An important certificate used by jlab_secure wireless clients to establish a secure connection will expire on May 15, 2008. After this time, jlab_secure clients that have not been updated with the new certificate will not be able to connect to jlab_secure. Note that NEW jlab_secure clients can follow the usual configuration procedure. These systems will receive the updated certificate as part of the configuration process. Instructions for updating your system can be found at the following links:

For users of other systems, you should insure that both the new and old certificates are installed. You can download the certificate in either of two different formats:

Format Before May 15th After May 15th
Base64 (PEM) Certificate Certificate
Binary (DER) Certificate Certificate

jlab_secure Wireless Networking

The JLab Computer Center supports wireless clients on the 'jlab_secure' network. This network is based on Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security and supports multiple client adapters and operating systems. In addition, 802.11a/b/g coverage is available for jlab_secure users in all areas where wireless has been deployed, providing over 100Mbps of bandwidth per access point.

jlab_secure Configuration Instructions

If you've followed all the steps but still can't connect, please see the JLab Secure FAQ page.

jlab_guest Wireless Networking

The jlab_guest wireless network is provided for short term or guest systems. It uses WEP security, and employs a WEP key that is changed three months. All JLab wireless systems should be configured to use jlab_secure.

Legacy clients that cannot be reconfigured to use WPA will still be supported during migration. However, these clients should be upgraded to support WPA and placed on the jlab_secure wireless network as soon as possible. We recommend compatible 802.11a/b/g adapters. The new WEP key may be obtained from the WEP Registration Page

Legacy WEP client configuration instructions are here.

If you would like reminders regarding WEP key changes on the 'jlab' wireless network, please visit http://mailman.jlab.org and subscribe to the Jlab_guest_wep mailing list.

Requests for temporary wireless network connectivity for meetings and conferences can be fulfilled so long as they are made in a timely fashion. Such requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
