DHCP Support Information
JLAB DHCP Support
Overview
The use of DHCP at JLab is undergoing some changes. Our network team is currently in the process of
creating virtual local area networks (VLANs) across the site. Therefore, DHCP will not work in the same way from
building to building. If you have questions regarding the details of these changes, please send an email to
helpdesk@jlab.org with inquiries.
Client Configuration
To use DHCP, you must modify your IP configuration for its use. This is different for each operating
system (OS). Please find instructions on how to configure your OS to use DHCP below.
Windows DHCP Configuration
- Go to Start
- Control Panel
- Network Configuration
- Right-click Local Area Connection
- Select Properties from the pop-up menu
- From the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click the Properties button
- Select "Obtain IP address automatically"
- Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
- Reboot if prompted to do so.
Once your system has rebooted, open any web browser.
- In the web browser, go to http://netreg.jlab.org (it should automatically open to this page)
- Login using your JLAB username and password.
- Read the Network Acceptable Use Policy that is displayed.
- Click on the "Accept" button displayed on the bottom of the
page.
- Reboot your machine for a final time to get your correct IP
address
Linux
In order to modify your system to use DHCP, modify the file
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to look similar to
this:
- DEVICE=eth0
- BOOTPROTO=dhcp
- ONBOOT=yes
Once this file is modified (as specified above), you can reboot the
system and bring up a web browser.
- In the web browser, go to http://netreg.jlab.org
- Login using your JLAB username and password.
- Read the Network Acceptable Use Policy that is displayed.
- Click on the "Accept" button displayed on the bottom of the
page.
- Reboot your machine for a final time to get your correct IP address
